[USA] Missoula airport eying non-stop flights from Texas

MISSOULA

Getting from north to south could get a lot easier for people in Montana, but it all depends on whether or not the Missoula airport gets a big grant.

Who needs connecting flights? A grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation could mean a single-plane flight to Texas for Missoulians. The Missoula International Airport is applying for a grant that would create the round trip a possible.

"We've kind of been looking for what we thought would be the next opportunity," airport director Cris Jensen said, adding that he's noticed a need for trips to the southwest, so the flight would be a simple case of supply and demand.

"We already have a lot of demand for service to Texas, and typically what will happen is when you get new non-stop service, that will increase the demand, it makes it easier to get there, and so more people will be interested in it," Jensen explained.

Missoula plans to submit its application on Monday. The DOT will release the grants sometime in December, and if Missoula is selected, they will receive $750,000.

Jensen says the airport will accept any airlines willing to do the flight, but the two most likely airlines are American, which flies into Dallas, and United, which flies into Houston.

The economic impact depends on a lot of factors that haven't been decided yet, like whether or not the flight will be seasonal. But regardless, Texans vacationing in Missoula boost local finances for the airport, and the community.

"Of course a lot of traffic isn't just traffic that would benefit the airport. It's people from Texas that want to come to Missoula, that want to be vacationing here, that are gonna be staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping in our stores," Jensen said.

Missoula International Airport officials would negotiate with airlines if the grant is handed out.

Hmmm... the same US Feredal Agency which is stamping on foreign carriers access to the USA because they might have access to national support in the weay of subsidies is actually the Federal Agency which is GIVING OUT GRANTS (subsidies by a different name) to US airports so they can subsidise airlines for service.

I guess being Global Policeman has its privileges.

Did you know that all this "Country Category" stuff which affects airports and airlines around the world is actually IASA - a US Federal program - only slightly supported by ICAO, which is an International body of the United Nations? Yes, the Global Policeman has created its own monster.
