SVG Air to link Antigua and Montserrat
Monday, March 7th, 2011.

Transportation between Montserrat and Antigua is expected to get easier after St Vincent Grenadines Air (SVG Air) was approved to operate daily scheduled commercial air services between the two islands.

The airline said it will operate two daily return flights after agreeing to guarantee seat provisions. The flights are set to begin next week on Tuesday March 15, just in time for the busy St Patrick’s Festival in Montserrat. The one-way airfare per passenger will be US $74 (EC $200) plus taxes, according to the airline.

The morning flights will depart Antigua at 7 am and leave from Montserrat at 7:30 am. The return evening flights will then depart Antigua at 4 pm and depart Montserrat at 4:30 pm.

SVG Air said it is also open to adding non-guaranteed flights and/or charters to Antigua and neighbouring islands based on requests and on market demand.

Meanwhile Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation John Maginley said SVG’s agreement to fly daily flights between Antigua and Barbuda is not a temporary measure.

“It is not an interim arrangement. SVG Air applied to the Air Transport licensing board; they were approved. They then approached the ministry and the government and we came to an agreement where they fly four flights a day in and out of Barbuda and they have a two-year contract and we have gotten into a subsidy-type arrangement with them,” Maginley said.

St Vincent Grenadines Air (SVG Air) has been in operation since 1990, and is based in St Vincent, Barbados, St Lucia and Grenada, with hangars in St Vincent, Bequia and Canouan. The company operates scheduled and charter flights throughout the islands of the Caribbean, in particular between Barbados, Nevis, Bequia, Canouan, St Vincent, St Kitts, St Marten, Union Island, Mustique, Grenada, St Lucia, St Barts, Anguilla, and Martinique, and also as far afield as Guyana and Jamaica.
