ST JOHN’S

The board of directors of LIAT, The Caribbean Airline, confirms the appointment of Julie Reifer-Jones as chief executive officer.

Reifer-Jones is a graduate of The University of the West Indies, a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados.

Prior to joining LIAT, as chief financial officer in 2008, she held several senior finance positions and has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of finance and management.

On her appointment, Reifer-Jones stated she was delighted to be taking up this new challenge and was looking forward to delivering an improved level of service from LIAT to the region.

Reifer-Jones is the first woman to be appointed CEO of LIAT.

In announcing her appointment, chairman of the board of LIAT, Dr Jean Holder noted: “Mrs. Reifer-Jones has served at LIAT in the number two position for some nine years and in that capacity has acted as CEO for extended periods on several occasions.

“In addition to her familiarity with the people and culture of the region and her intimate knowledge of the company, her financial and academic qualifications should complement the practical experience of the airline industry she has acquired on the job. I wish her well as she undertakes one of the most challenging assignments in the region.”

That is sad news, as LIAT desperately needs new leadership, ideas, vision and rejuvenation, yes Julie Reifer-Jones has been there for 9 years and acting-CEO a few times, but really what has she done there with her 25 years of management and finance experience ?

Everyone in the Eastern Caribbean knows, LIAT (5xATR-42-600, 5xATR-72-600) is a horribly run airline for years, its losing money and poorly run, constant financial problems, strikes, late flights, lost baggage, etc.

The Board is inept to make real changes, CEO's have come and gone, 5 in past 10 years, all quit or left early, Mark Darby (Baboo), Brian Challenger (LIAT), Ian Brunton (CAL), David Evans (BA) and now Reifer-Jones (LIAT).

Great CEO's can't do crap without good experienced people around them and a Board that backs them for change.

Upon arrival at LIAT, Darby was given the mandate to transform a "bankrupt and inefficient regional airline that was losing EC$80 million (US$30 million) a year"

He left, could not get things done, now they pick Reifer-Jones, because she won't rock the boat, take orders and business as usual, screwed up and burning cash !

Can't change the company with the same people that created the problems and can't keeping doing the same over and over expecting different results.

Status quo wins !
