Venzuela airline passengers head home after Guyana allows plane to land
June 8, 2015

GEORGETOWN, Guyana

Venezuelan carrier Conviasa Airlines was given the green light to land in Guyana, allowing 42 passengers who had been stranded in the country over the weekend to get back home.

Conviasa Airlines was denied permission to land at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) because it had not lodged a required bond and owed landing and administrative fees to the airport and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCCA).

However, a government statement issued yesterday indicated that the Venezuela state-owned carrier had been given the go-ahead for a “one-off” flight to transport the passengers.

Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson, who has responsibility for the transportation sector, said the airline had paid the monies owed to the CJIA and GCAA, but is still to lodge the bond with government.

It is standard procedure for airlines operating out of Guyana to lodge a bond in case passengers are displaced by any issue that affects an airline’s flights in and out of the country.

Conviasa Airlines made its inaugural flight to Guyana in November 2013.
