LAST MONTH, one of the biggest business stories in this part of the world was the news that regional air carrier, LIAT, needed US$5.4 million in emergency funding to ensure the airline did not run out of the cash it requires to continue operating.

According to its website, LIAT is jointly owned by 11 Caribbean countries and a number of regional institutional investors, but four countries are reported to own 94.7 per cent of the airline—Barbados, Antigua, St Vincent and Dominica.
