Copa Is Launching a New Low-Cost Airline in the Caribbean Basin

There’s a new airline coming to the Caribbean region: Wingo.

Wingo, which is the brainchild of Panama-based Copa Holdings, could be a major boost both for intraregional travel and for Latin American tourism to the Caribbean.

The low-cost carrier, which will be based in Colombia, will begin service Dec. 1 with flights to 16 cities in 10 countries in South America and the Caribbean Basin.

Wingo will operate a fleet of four Boeing 737-700 aircraft carrying 142 passengers.

The initial service will include nonstop flights from Bogota to Cancun, Havana, Aruba, Punta Cana, Mexico City, San Andres, Panama City, Quito and Cartagena, among others, which will also add new connections for travelers from Latin America heading to the aforementioned Caribbean destinations.

The service will include twice-weekly Aruba and Punta Cana flights; thrice-weekly Havana flights and five-times-weekly Cancun flights, among others.

The single-class carrier will also be operating a number of domestic flights within Colombia, including five-times-weekly flights between Cartagena and San Andres, creating a new connection for travelers heading to Colombia’s Caribbean island destination.

“We are proud to launch Wingo, which diversifies and expands Copa Holdings’ business and operational models, allowing us to better serve a market segment where many opportunities for growth and development still exist”, said Pedro Heilbron, CEO of Copa Holdings.
