Sunday, September 07, 2014

An aircraft originating from Cuba en route to Venezuela made an emergency landing at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston Saturday afternoon.

The Aerolineas Estelar aircraft was forced to land because of an oil leak.

Director General of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority, Leroy Lindsay said the aircraft will remain in Jamaica until the source of the leak is identified.

“They’ll be doing their investigations into what may have cause this oil leak and when they discover it, they will have to fix it and make sure it’s working before it is released. Our people from the flight safety division of the JCAA will have to be convinced that the aircraft is in air worthiness condition to depart,”

He also disclosed that following the emergency landing, all emergency procedures were put in place at the airport.

“The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew members left the aircraft. The aircraft will now be inspected by maintenance engineers. The passengers will try, with the help of the airline, to find alternate flights for them to go onto their destinations but if there are none we will have to put them up in a hotel,” he said.

There were no reports of injuries.
