St. Croix to Host Caribbean Air Rally Planes April 13-16
April 8, 2016

The largest single group of aircraft in the history of the Virgin Islands will land at the Henry E Rohlsen International Airport, St. Croix, as part of the 2016 Governor General’s Cup Caribbean Air Rally. The rally takes two weeks to complete. It will travel 2,717 miles between April 11 and April 24. The route is: Fort Lauderdale, Grand Turk, St. Croix, Martinique, Antigua, Tortola, Haiti, Fort Lauderdale.

Hosted by the V.I. Department of Tourism (DOT) and Bohlke International Airways, the 34 aircraft (comprised of single and twin-engine propeller aircraft and one private jet), carrying a total of 81 pilots and passengers, will begin landing in three squadrons at 10 a.m., Wednesday, on April 13. St. Croix will be hosting the Air Rally form April 13-16.

A welcoming committee of DOT officials, Bohlke International Airways staff and youth members of the Virgin Islands Tuskegee Airman Chapter Inc (VICTAI) will greet the air rally upon arrival.

The Caribbean Air Rally is in its 7th year and is an annual event organized by the Canadian-based International Air Rally Organization. President Catherine Tobenas said, “We have heard wonderful things about the warmth and hospitality of St Croix and your beautiful unspoiled beaches. Bohlke International Airways and the V.I. Department of Tourism have gone above and beyond organizing the logistics and events that will surely show our participants a wonderful time and make our three-day St Croix visit the highlight of our rally!”

Fiona Horne, liaison officer of Air Rally St. Croix, conducted a meeting with 15 local aviation officials at the airport this week to fine tune the air traffic control, customs, security, landing and parking logistics of handling the largest general aviation rally the territory has ever seen.

“The team at the Henry E Rohlsen airport are world class professionals and will handle this event in the smooth, efficient and friendly way our airport is renowned for in the Caribbean,” Horne said.

There is an important ‘give back’ aspect to the Air Rally in its Pilot Mentor program. Bohlke International Airways is sponsoring young Haitian pilot and aspiring commercial pilot Marie-Yves Montimat, who will be flying with Angela Bullard Cloud, her mentor. The Pilot Mentor program is fully funded by sponsors and the International Air Rally.

Discovery Network’s Television Show “The Aviators” has a film crew on board the rally and are filming an entire episode devoted to the Air Rally adventures.

The best places to see the rally arrivals and departures are at the airport. Aircraft will be parked at the east end of the airport.

Also, on arrival day, west end beaches, Dorset and Limon, as well as the Frederiksted pier, will offer an unobstructed final approach vantage point.

On departure day, the aircraft will take off, heading east towards Martinique. The best vantage area is the airport.
