[Phoenix AW] Airline boss fails to find sureties
April 8, 2015.

Chief executive officer of Phoenix Airways Neville Chester Gumbs has been remanded to Dodds Prison for a further 28 days after remaining hard-pressed to find any sureties.

The 27-year-old Anguillan, who lives at South District, St George, returned to court today after being offered $100,000 bail three weeks ago.

When he appeared in the District ‘A’ Traffic Court, Magistrate Graveney Bannister reminded him that he could get two sureties at $50,000 each, but Gumbs maintained he had no one in Barbados willing to stand as sureties for him.

Further, his defence attorney Wilfred Abrahams withdrew from the matter.

Gumbs faces six charges of criminal deception and another for evading liability, in that he intended to permanently default either in part or in whole, by dishonestly inducing Denise Reed to wait for $5,148 owed for accommodation of a studio apartment at Club Rockley, Christ Church.

The alleged offences were committed between January 30 and February 16 this year.
