Dutch MPs still pursuing Hi-Jet rescue assistance
28 September, 2014

Dutch MPs Sjoerd Sjoerdsma of D66 and Harry van Bommel of the Socialist Party have again raised the issue of Dutch assistance in the Hi-Jet helicopter rescue efforts.

After the Dutch Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee’s Suriname-Netherlands debate on September 9, Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bert Koenders, had said that Dutch assistance was being considered.

Sjoerdsma and van Bommel are now looking to hear the outcome of these considerations. They also want clarification on the status of the device that Suriname requested.

Hi-Jet and family members of the missing two men had expressed disdain over the way the Dutch responded to their request. The Dutch took almost a month to reply to a request for a special kind of metal detection equipment operable from the air, finally saying that they did not have what Suriname was looking for.

Considering the potentially life or death time sensitive nature of the rescue mission, the tardy response was received with resentment. That the Dutch have been “contemplating” for almost another month is likely to be perceived in a similar way.
