Air Europa is interested in Miami-Havana route

Air Europa announced that prompted the appropriate permissions to US authorities to "operate three or four flights a day between Miami and Havana." Juan Jose Hidalgo, president of the airline, said Air Europa wants to use the new context for increase their presence in the area.

The company unveiled plans after US President Barack Obama and Raul Castro announced last December 17, an agreement for the resumption of diplomatic relations.

Currently, Air Europa, property of Globalia Group, offers a daily flight Madrid-Havana carrying about 4,000 passengers a week, and also operates between Madrid, Miami and Punta Cana five days a week.

Hidalgo said that since 2010 they are studying a possible "air bridge" between Miami and Havana. He said he has discussed the matter with the mayor of the city of Florida, the Cuban Tomás Regalado. Currently, a dozen airlines run between Miami and Cuba, a business that depends on licenses granted by the US government.

Obama's announcement that his administration will allow a greater number of Americans travel to Cuba for various purposes -excluding tourism- give scope for an increase of flights, considered Hidalgo. "There will be many problems with the Cuban and US authorities for permission," he said.
