As of November 1, there will be a new air service between Antigua and the British Virgin Islands (BVI).

Premier of the British territory, Dr Orlando Smith, told the BVI Beacon the flights on VI Airlink will run twice weekly – Saturdays and Sundays.

The government in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) has reportedly struck a deal to subsidise them.

“There will be a subsidy, which we are at the moment discussing, because it is important when you are starting up a service such as that, that there be some support in the initial stages; and that is what we will be doing. I cannot give you the quantum; I can tell you that we are discussing some assistance which is necessary for this kind of start-up service,” Smith told BVI press.

Smith said the flights by would allow European visitors to get to the BVI by connecting through Antigua. Press in the BVI said the deal was struck after concerns about poor service by LIAT.

“I am pleased to announce that we have made significant progress with the establishment of a commuter service between Antigua and the BVI. We expect that this service will start in time for the winter season and will connect with major airlines out of Europe,” Premier Smith stated.

He added: “This is great news for our tourism industry, as it will make it much easier for our visitors coming from and through London, to get here.”

Meanwhile, Dominican-based airline, Hummingbird Air, has applied to operate flights between St Croix in the USVI and Dominica via St Maarten after the Antigua-based LIAT discontinued flights on that route.
