Allegiant announces two new destinations from CVG, and one exotic option for the summer

Allegiant Air is adding flights to two new cities from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport this spring, namely Destin, Florida, and Washington, D.C. – but for travelers looking for something a little more exotic, they've got that covered, too.

Airline officials told WCPO they'll begin charter service from CVG to the Caribbean – specifically Montego Bay, Jamaica – starting this summer. That's in addition to the new routes, two weekly flights to Destin-Fort Walton (VPS) and Washington, D.C., via the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) that were announced Tuesday morning and will begin this spring.

The additional service is a credit to Allegiant's newly launched base of operations here, which makes it easier for the airline to expand service. Allegiant will station three Airbus A319 aircraft at CVG and has hired 100 new employees with plans for at least 50 more.

"Those things would not be possible if we didn't have a base here," said Lucas Johnson, Allegiant representative told WCPO. "We'll potentially even grow that charter service to some other Caribbean destinations, which I'm sure would be pretty popular right now. I think we'll continue to grow some of those longer flights that we couldn't do otherwise."

Allegiant will partner with Apple Vacations and Vacation Express on Montego Bay.

As for Destin and Baltimore/Washington, those destinations still primarily target leisure passengers – Allegiant's bread and butter – but could lessen the strain if Delta makes more cuts on shorter, regional routes. In October, Delta ceased serving to Pittsburgh, Grand Rapids, Mich. and Richmond, Va.

"It has to be a mix of both (business and leisure)," said Kenton County Airport Board chairman J. Michael Schlotman. "The good news in my mind is, it somewhat reduces the risk of what Delta may do in the future, because they're not necessarily competing for the same customer."

Nonstop service from CVG to Baltimore/Washington begins April 29 with fares as low as $39. Flights to Destin-Fort Walton begins May 20 and ends Sept. 5 with fares as low as $39.

Both are two new destinations for Allegiant in 2016.
