Former EZjet boss to be extradited to Florida
Thursday, December 27, 2012

Embattled former EZjet founder and chief executive officer Sonny Ramdeo is expected to be extradited to Florida early in the new year to face wire fraud charges in connection with a US$20 million federal payroll tax fraud scheme that he is accused of perpetrating against his former employers.

Initially facing a civil suit launched by his former employers Promise Healthcare Inc. and Success Healthcare Group for allegedly embezzling at least US$5 million from them while employed as their payroll supervisor, the matter has now escalated to a criminal case after he was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) in New York on December 11 following his indictment on December 6.

Ramdeo, 35, a Guyana-born, United States citizen entered a non-guilty plea at his New York Federal Court appearance on December 17 and opted to reserved his bail application until he is extradited to Florida, where he is a resident of Sunrise in South Florida.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office website for the Southern District of Florida, defendant Ramdeo, who had been working for the two companies that owned and operated hospital facilities throughout the United States, was responsible for overseeing the payment of bi-weekly wages and related payroll taxes for more than 3,500 employees.

To execute his scheme, Ramdeo allegedly incorporated PayServ Tax Inc. and thereafter represented to officers and employees of Promise Healthcare that PayServ Tax would handle the transfer of local, state, and federal payroll taxes to the proper agencies on behalf of Promise Healthcare and Success Healthcare.

The indictment alleges that from September 2003 until October of this year, Ramdeo wired money into his accounts that was to have been used to cover payroll taxes for Promise Healthcare’s workers. However, prosecutors said he formed two companies, Payserv Tax and EZjet GT, to receive the money. According to the indictment, in 2011 and 2012 Ramdeo made two transfers, totalling US$363,700, to his account that was to be used for payroll taxes at a hospital in East Los Angeles. In October, he diverted US$100,828 that was to cover payroll taxes for employees of a hospital in Gonzales, La.

It was alleged by Promise Healthcare Inc. and Success Healthcare Group in their October civil suit that Ramdeo had siphoned more than US$5 million off to use to start up low-cost airline EZjet that began its Guyana to New York direct route earlier this year and later expanded to Toronto.

The airline, however, was closed after suspension of service by the U.S. Department of Transport in November and allegations of embezzlement by the company’s founder and chief executive officer.

Guyana Transport Minister Robeson Benn says the government will be refunding EZjet passengers who purchased tickets in Guyana using the US$200,000 bond that the now-suspended airline had to lodge.

Ramdeo faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charges.
