Thomas Cook Airlines announced that it will be making weekly flights from Manchester, England to a number of Caribbean destinations, including Antigua, this winter.

Tourism Minister John Maginley, when contacted, said he is hopeful that this will stimulate more traffic from the north of England.

“In the past we have done some good numbers, but once British Airways stopped the shuttle from Manchester to London to Gatwick, we saw the numbers decline a little bit,” he said. “So we hope that that would again start to increase the numbers out of the UK by opening the north through direct travel at least once a week.”

The government has been in talks with the airline to get them on board for the flights out of Manchester for the winter season for some time now.

The airline also announced plans to operate on a “specially configured” A330 from November 10, weekly, from Manchester to St Lucia to Barbados.

On December 19, it will inaugurate the Manchester to Antigua to Barbados service and both flights will initially operate until the end of April 2014.

As reported by UK media, Thomas Cook said the St Lucia and Antigua services are the only UK flights to the destinations outside London.

According to Thomas Cook group's head of air travel, Christoph Debus, the new routes will help offset a recent loss in connections between Manchester and Gatwick, reports said.
