Latin American airline AviancaTaca will add three direct flights to the nine it already operates to Cuba from its hubs in Peru, El Salvador and Costa Rica, the Cuban economic weekly Opciones reported.

Travel from Lima to Havana will expand to six flights per week, from Sunday through Friday, and the return flights to the Cuban capital will run from Monday through Saturday, according to what company officials told the state-run Cuban publication.

The firm also announced that the first flight between San Salvador and Havana on Aug. 6 will inaugurate a program of three flights per week, making it the only non-stop flight between those two cities.

This new flight will strengthen tourism and trade relations between these two countries and allow connection options for other important markets in the region," the regional director of sales for AviancaTaca for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean - Danilo Correa - said in San Salvador.

AviancaTaca Holding S.A., a joint venture of Colombia's Avianca and Central America-based TACA, has a fleet of more than 140 aircraft that fly to more than 100 destinations in the Americas and Europe.

Last year, Cuba received 2.5 million tourists and this year authorities are predicting that the island will welcome 2.7 million, despite global economic woes.

More than 1.5 million foreign tourists visited Cuba in the first six months of this year, a figure that represents an increase of 10.6 percent over the same period in 2010, according to figures provided by the National Statistics Office.
