Belize experienced significant damage from Hurricane Richard, which hit Belmopan and Belize City on Sunday night.

Damage to tourism infrastructure and hotels is not yet available, but Prime Minister Dean Barrow estimated the storm’s damage at $33.8 million, which does not include the costs to tourism and to restore utilities throughout the country. As of Monday night, all of Belize was without power.

Philip S.W. Goldson Airport in Belize City remained closed on Tuesday morning.

More than 30% of the citrus crops were damaged as were 200 homes. Some were completely destroyed.

No injuries or deaths have been reported; tourists had been evacuated from offshore islands in advance of the storm.

The storm weakened to a tropical depression by late Monday as it moved over the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico and is not expected to regain strength, according to the National Hurricane Center.
