Cabinet has approved a $320 infrastructure upgrade at the Piarco and Crown Point airports and a $163 million drainage plan, Works Minister Colm Imbert announced yesterday.

He was speaking at yesterday's post-Cabinet news conference at the Diplomatic Centre, in St Ann's

He said the Airports Authority has been given the go-ahead to develop lands, infrastructure, north of the existing terminal building.

It would involve putting in roads, drainage, electricity and other infrastructure works to facilitate the construction of a new building for the Metrological Services, a new office complex and new 251-room Radison Hotel. The hotel would be constructed and managed by the Primis Corporation. The work would also facilitate the construction of an international airport business park.

Imbert said the Crown Point runway would be rehabilitated. He said airfield lighting at both airports would be brought up to international standards.

The sewer treatment plant at the Crown Point airport would be upgraded.

On the drainage plan, Imbert said 13 new drainage projects had been included in the 2009/2010 programme of the Ministry of Works.

Asked about Port of Spain, Imbert said the drains in Port of Spain would also be cleared regularly to prevent flooding.
