Sun Country Airlines to begin nonstop seasonal service to Puerto Rico
Nov 17, 2014

A trip to Puerto Rico from Fort Myers will be a bit faster in May.

Next year, Sun Country Airlines will begin nonstop seasonal service between Southwest Florida Airport and San Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico from May 3 to Aug. 23, according to a Lee County Port Authority press release.

This is the first time RSW will offer nonstop service to Puerto Rico, a United States territory in the Caribbean Sea. According to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Lee and Collier counties are home to about 27,000 to 36,000 Puerto Ricans.

The airline will operate a weekly Sunday flight and then increase to twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays from June 11 to Aug. 23.

Linking Southwest Florida to the Caribbean has been a goal of the Lee County Port Authority, said Executive Director Robert Ball in a statement.

“Our business community and residents with family and friends in Puerto Rico will now be able to travel directly from Fort Myers,” Ball said. “We are also excited to welcome visitors from Puerto Rico to enjoy our beaches and water sports such as kayaking and fishing, golf and baseball, as well as dining and shopping.”

One-way flights from Fort Myers will start at $129, according to Sun Country Airlines, which is based in the Twin Cities.
