Fly Jamaica has to regain confidence of passengers- GCAA
Jan 15, 2018

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) recently met with Fly Jamaica Airways and expressed disappointment at the airline’s operations, delays, cancellations of flights and the way it treats passengers.

However, Director General of the Authority, Egbert Field during an interview on Monday, January 15, 2018, said it is not considering revoking the licenses of Fly Jamaica despite numerous difficulties the airline experienced during the first two weeks this year.

“What they have to do…they have now got to work win back the confidence of the passengers. I must say that the passengers were not happy at all and they’re (Fly Jamaica) aware of how the passengers felt during the period,” the Director-General noted.

He explained that revocation of licenses can be spurred from gross negligence or anything associated with affecting the safety of travellers.

The Director-General noted that a list of the scheduled flights from Thursday last to the weekend was forwarded to the authority outlining how the airline will be clearing off its backlog of passengers. Their plans included chartering a B757 aircraft.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded in New York, Jamaica and Guyana from January 2, after flights between Guyana, Jamaica and the USA were cancelled up to January 5 and delayed from January 6 to January 7.

Meanwhile, when asked for an update in relation to new international airlines joining the Guyana market, Field said there have been no major developments in this regard.
