JCAA reveals 147 flights cancelled during partial airspace shutdown
28 September, 2017

Jamaica Gleaner

Director General of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA), Nari Williams Singh, says 147 flights were cancelled as a result of the lightning strike at its control tower in Kingston earlier this month. Williams Singh told members of Parliament’s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) today that the losses resulting from the incident would be significant. He admitted that the communication with stakeholders in the midst of the breakdown could have been better.

Meanwhile, the JCAA director general said the JCAA resumed 24-hour air traffic control services on September 19. He also disclosed that the aviation industry regulator has decided not to repair the radar communication system that was damaged by lightning strike and resulted in a partial shutdown of the country’s airspace. Williams Singh said the JCAA decided instead to fast-track the switchover to a new system that was scheduled for October 2.
