Jamaica's airspace returns to 24 hour service
Tue September 19, 2017

The country's airspace is again open to 24 hour service. The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) said this started at 7 o'clock Tuesday morning. The restoration comes almost two weeks after a lightning strike damaged radar and communication equipment at the agency.

In a statement Tuesday morning, the JCAA said it informed stakeholders of this development on Monday night. In a subsequent interview with RJR News, JCAA Director General Nari Williams-Singh said some operations have not been fully restored.

"Some of the systems are still in need of continued work and so it's going to be an ongoing process and we continue this," he explained. He said the full effect of the disruption to air services is not yet known but the JCAA will be conducting "a full review to see what the impact was and we have been in touch with our airline partners. Right now our main focus is really to try and accomodate all the flights, which we are now able to do," he said.

The agency is now operating on the new air navigational system, however training is still ongoing.
