Full access still not restored to Jamaica's airspace, 2 deadlines missed
Monday | September 18, 2017

Even after missing two previous deadlines, the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) has still not restored full access to Jamaica's airspace. The JCAA's corporate communication manager, Ava Marie Ingram, this afternoon confirmed that the island remains on limited service.

At a press conference last Thursday, Transport Minister Mike Henry said full restoration of air services should take place within the next 48 hours. That deadline expired on Saturday. This is after missing a previous deadline last Monday as announced by the Information Minister, Ruel Reid, via a tweet.

The JCAA has curtailed access to Jamaica's airspace after a massive lightning strike severely damaged radar communication equipment at its Air Control Tower at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston two Fridays ago. A back-up system is currently being used while repairs are ongoing.

Addressing the People's National Party's annual conference yesterday, party president, Dr Peter Phillips, blamed incompetence on the part of the management of the JCAA and the government for the situation that is costing the government millions in well-needed revenues and hampering visitor arrivals.
