The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority JCAA says work is being done to restore Air Traffic Services at the Kingston Air Traffic Control Centre. This follows damage caused to the JCAA’s radar and communication networks due to a lightning strike, yesterday. The damage resulted in all arrival and departure activities being suspended.

In a release the JCAA states that technicians from AEROTEL Limited and the JCAA’s Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Personnel, worked overnight and have managed to complete some restorative work on the power distribution and data network, as well as radio communication. It adds that troubleshooting and rectification activities continue.

JCAA explains that the contingency routing, which would have allowed aircrafts to depart and arrive at Jamaica’s two main international airports through coordination with neighbouring flight information regions, is being impacted by the position and effects of Hurricane Irma. As such, JCAA notes that Jamaican airspace will be closed until 6:59 p.m today (September 9).
