The remains of the two senior officials of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) killed in the January 12 earthquake in Haiti will be flown to Antigua this week.

A communiqué from LIAT said the remains of the men, Rosemond James, former director general of ECCAA, and Gregory McAlpin, former director of Flight Safety, would be transported from the Dominican Republic, at the airline’s expense.

Further, Caribbean Airlines, based in Trinidad, McAlpin’s hometown, will absorb the cost of transporting his body from Antigua to Port of Spain where the funeral will take place on Friday, March 12.

McAlpin’s sister Karen Canejo told this newspaper a memorial service will be held in Antigua; however the date has not been confirmed.

James, a national of St Lucia who resided in Antigua, will be buried here on March 23.

The two officials had travelled to Haiti on January 12 to attend a meeting of the Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System. That very day the 7.0 magnitude quake struck, tumbling hundreds of structures and killing about 300,000 people.

The men were among dozens of persons entombed in the Hotel Montana, which collapsed during the quake.

The bodies were pulled from the rubble on February 22 and placed in sealed containers. Identification was initially made through their jewellery and driver’s licences; followed by laboratory processes.
