McAlpin's body to be flown in by Govt
Friday, March 5th 2010

The body of Trinidad and Tobago national Gregory McAlpin, who died in the Haiti following the January 12 earthquake, will be flown back to this country at Government’s expense, Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon said at yesterday’s post-Cabinet press conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s.

Gopee-Scoon said she did not have details of the expense just yet, but noted that LIAT and Caribbean Airlines had both agreed to transport the body from Haiti to the Dominican Republic and then to Trinidad.

McAlpin, who went missing following the quake, was eventually found by search and recovery officials in the ruins of the Montana Hotel in Port-au-Prince.

The Director of Flight Safety of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority, McAlpin was staying at the hotel when the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck. He was attending a Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System board meeting. The building was flattened when the earthquake struck. -AR
