Tuesday, 23 February 2010

Civil Aviation Authority of Haiti (OFNAC) one of the entities representing ECCAA in the recovery efforts, informed that the remains of Messrs James and McAlpin were recovered yesterday.

Although the bodies were identified based on their jewelry and their driver’s license, secondary confirmation through a laboratory identification process will be conducted by end of this week. When this is completed, the repatriation process will take place.

The ECCAA wishes to express its deepest condolences to the families of Messrs James and McAlpin. We would also like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this very difficult time.

Missing Trini's body found in Haiti

Wednesday, February 24th 2010

The body of Trinidad and Tobago national Gregory McAlpin, who went missing following the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, was found on Monday afternoon.

Search-and-recovery personnel found near his body, his driver’s permit and jewelry.

Gregory McAlpin, the director of flight safety of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority, was in Port-au-Prince’s Montana Hotel when the 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck. He was attending a Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System board meeting.

The earthquake, however, flattened the hotel, trapping scores of guests.

Earthquake survivor, Ramesh Lutchmedial, the Director of Civil Aviation in Trinidad and Tobago, confirmed the information that began appearing on the popular social networking site, Facebook, yesterday regarding McAlpin.

Lutchmedial was also in Haiti when the earthquake struck and was on his way to the same hotel. The remains of Rosemond James, director-general of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority, were also found at the hotel site.

In response to the news, the chairman, board of directors, management and staff of LIAT (1974) Ltd sent a statement.

’Both of these officials at all times exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and dedication to the ideals of aviation safety and security, and their passing represents a tremendous loss to the civil aviation community in the Eastern Caribbean,’ the airline said.
