ST JOHN’S, Antigua, February 15, 2010 – With the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) search to find its top official and another senior employee missing in Haiti now off, the agency has put an interim boss in place.

At a recent emergency meeting, the Board of Directors identified Donald McPhail to act as Director General for an initial six-month period, in the absence of the substantive holder of the post, Rosemond James.

James and the ECCAA’s Director of Flight Safety Gregory McAlpin have still not been accounted for following the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. Both were in Port-au-Prince to attend a Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System (CASSOS) meeting when the 7.0-magnitude quake struck.

“The Board of Directors, Management and Staff are indeed saddened by the turn of events and wish to ensure the Civil Aviation community that the ECCAA will continue to provide a high standard of service,” said a statement from Chairman of the Antigua-based Authority, Godfred Pompey.

The Montana Hotel that James and McAlpin were checked into was reduced to rubble in the quake. A week later, a five-member search team – comprising three Grenadian police officers who were previously part of a UN peacekeeping mission to Haiti and two ECCAA employees – had been sent to look for James and McAlpin when the ECCAA could not make contact with the two officials.

The search for the two was officially called off last Monday.
