The up and down struggles of regional airline LIAT are well known, with the latest episode having played out last month.

That was when LIAT insisted it would continue serving the Caribbean despite its latest financial challenges.

The airline’s management said at the time that LIAT was disappointed to again see media reports circulating about the carrier being on the verge of collapse.

This had to do with the alleged difficulties being experienced with the proposed sale of LIAT shares from Barbados to Antigua and Barbuda.

While the airline continues to pick itself and dust itself up to carry on despite continuing challenges, there are critics and potential entrepreneurs who suggest LIAT has and continues to receive favoritism over proposed small airlines seeking to gain a foothold in air travel in the OECS and further afield.

Some blame has been thrown at the OECS Civil Aviation Authority.

The allegation is that the authority is helping make LIAT a monopoly by keeping others out.

It’s a claim Director of the OECS Civil Aviation Authority Director Donald McPhail says he has heard.

However he tells WINN FM there is no merit to these allegations.
