[Caribbean] Civil aviation officials talk safety and security
Wednesday, May 16th, 2012.

Regional and local civil aviation officials meet in Antigua to talk safety and security.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Safety and security in the industry will be uppermost as regional and local civil aviation personnel gather for a week of deliberations.

According to a communiqué, topics such as insider threats, risk based measures, sustainable security measures, air cargo and travel document security, new technologies and information sharing intelligence will be discussed.

In stressing the relevance of the initiative, Peter Abraham – oversight officer within the Ministry of Civil Aviation and co-ordinator of the exercise – noted, “While the Caribbean is in a low threat zone we can not rest our guards in the matter of aviation security.

“We have got to be proactive and build our mechanisms to guard against any potential threats that may arise as it has been recently discovered that terrorists are now targeting low threat zones in planning deviant activities.”

The importance of airport safety and security to a small independent tourism based economy was highlighted by the tourism minister at the opening of the exercise.

The regional seminar on aviation security runs from May 14 to 15. A second meeting of the Aviation Security and Facilitation Regional Group follows from May 16 to 18.

Both assemblies take place at Grand Royal Antiguan Resort.
