Search for Air France crash flight recorders resumes
Friday, 4 February 2011

The multi-million pound hunt for two black box flight recorders from an Air France jet that crashed with the loss of 228 lives — including a doctor from Northern Ireland — will resume today.

Search teams will return for the fourth time to the area of the South Atlantic ocean where the Airbus A330-200 plunged out of the sky during a tropical storm in June 2009.

Flight AF447 was en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris when the tragedy struck. Five Britons and three Irish doctors died.

One of the dead was Dr Eithne Walls, who was in her 20s and from Ballygowan, Co Down. It is understood she had been living in Dublin.

An initial search found only 50 bodies and hundreds of pieces of the smashed aircraft. French transport secretary Thierry Mariani said the priority was to locate two flight recorders that could explain the cause of the crash.
