Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda the Hon. Gaston Browne has dispatched a letter of condolences to the wife of the late Sydney Prince, former Member of Parliament for the Constituency of Saint George from 1968 to 1976 during the Progressive Labour Movement PLM Administration.

Sydney Prince died on Saturday 23rd May at Aventura Hospital in Miami, Florida. In his letter to Mrs. Kathleen Prince, Prime Minister Browne stated that the entire community in which Sydney Prince was raised is unique. “It has produced a flood of vibrant minds and talented people, whose contribution to the development of our small island-country has been nothing short of miraculous. The Point was an incubation nest for talent, verve and drive among the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.

He outlined that the Prince Family has added significantly to the outstanding pantheon of leaders in the fine arts, in politics, literature, music and even in law enforcement. “Sydney’s passing has caused a diminution in the contributory lives remaining to claim this glorious past and our burgeoning future,”the Prime Minister’s letter reads.

He also noted that that the siblings of Sydney Prince including Arnold, John, Roland, Althea and others can take pride in the contribution of their outstanding family to national development. The country’s leader concluded that Sydney’s own life story serves as testament to the outstanding story which his entire family has writ large upon the canvas of national life.

Sydney Prince served in the Cabinet of the 1971 – 1976 PLM Government of Sir George Walter holding the portfolios of Finance, Trade, and Public Works. He also served as Acting Premier on a number of occasions. He was also a successful panorama champion arranger for Hellsgate Steel Orchestra in the late 50’s and Harmonites in the 70’s.

He has been credited for being instrumental in the formation of LIAT 1974 Limited, as well as the formation of the Antigua and Barbuda Development Bank. He was also a part of the negotiations with the Canadian Government for the construction of the V.C. Bird Airport which was opened in 1981.

Sydney Prince migrated to the United States in August of 1985 and lived in New York for a number of years before moving to Miami, Florida where he resided from 1987.
