US Airways: Flames seen on landing plane's engine
From staff, wire reports
Aug. 29, 2010

ARLINGTON, Va. A US Airways flight from Charlotte to Washington, D.C., landed Saturday night with flames coming from its left engine, officials said.

Flight 1764 had 86 passengers on board when the captain declared an emergency as a precaution while landing at Reagan National Airport. US Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder said flames were seen coming from the Airbus 319's engine, but the engine itself apparently was not on fire.

An airport spokesman said that by the time a fire crew arrived, there were no flames, and the plane taxied safely to the gate on one engine about five minutes later. Federal Aviation Administration officials said that all passengers were able to deplane normally and without injuries.

Wunder said mechanics are looking into what caused the flames. It was US Airways' second incident of the day. Saturday morning, US Airways Express Flight 2455 landed at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport after the Washington-bound plane's windshield cracked.

US Airways personnel said 14 passengers and 3 crew members were on board the flight, which originated from Nashville. The plane was taken out of service while the cause of the crack was investigated.
