US Airways is starting flights to the Caribbean island of Barbados from Philadelphia International Airport, in the United States, from October 1, 2009.

To begin with, the airline will operate four flights a week between Barbados and Philadelphia – on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Later, the number will be raised to daily flights for the winter season – starting from December 19, 2009, through April 17, 2010.

In a press release, US Airways, based in Tempe, Arizona, the United States, said that once the Barbados-Philadelphia service takes off, the carrier would be offering an average of 109 weekly, direct flights to 14 destinations in the Caribbean during the peak travel season there.

Gregory T. Taylor, US Airways senior vice president, said, “Barbados will be the 12th destination in the Caribbean served nonstop by US Airways from its Philadelphia hub, making it more convenient for travelers in cities across the US Airways system to visit not only this, but other popular island destinations.”

The Philadelphia-Barbados flight will take off from Philadelphia at 9:35 a.m. and will arrive in Barbados at 3:28 p.m. The flight will depart from Barbados at 4:25 p.m. and arrive in Philadelphia at 8:38 p.m.

Tickets for the Barbados-Philadelphia flights – to be operated using Airbus A319 aircraft, with 12 seats in the first-class and 112 seats in the main cabin – will go on sale on July 12, 2009.

Customers can book their flight through US Airways’ website at or by calling US Airways Reservations at 1-800-428-4322, or through their travel agent.

The airline said in the press release that “complete air and hotel vacation packages” would be available through US Airways Vacations.

Meanwhile, in the midst of capacity cuts that other US airlines are executing, US Airways has said that it has no plans to cut capacity further.

The airline has said while it will cut its 2009 capacity by 4 -6 per cent, it cannot cut capacity further because it is close to the minimum capacity by its pilots’ contract, according to reports.
