Southwest Airlines will begin 2X-daily nonstop Fort Lauderdale, Florida-Havana, Cuba, service and 1X-daily nonstop Tampa, Florida-Havana service on Dec. 12, the Dallas-based airline announced Oct. 13.

Additionally, Southwest will launch 2X-daily nonstop Fort Lauderdale-Varadero, Cuba, service on Nov. 13. Southwest said service details for a third Cuban destination, Santa Clara, will be released in coming weeks. All routes are subject to approval by Cuban aviation authorities. Tickets are already on sale for Southwest’s Havana and Varadero flights.

Southwest is one of eight US airlines (along with Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines) granted permission Aug. 31 by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin scheduled flights between the US and Havana.

On June 10, six US airlines (American, Frontier, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest and Sun Country Airlines) were granted permission by the US DOT to operate non-Havana routes.

The first commercial flight between the US and Cuba in 55 years was made by New York-based JetBlue Airways on Aug. 31, from Fort Lauderdale to Santa Clara. The US and Cuba formally restored scheduled airline service between the two countries on Feb. 17.
