[Southwest] DIA gets a nonstop flight to Belize
Aug 4, 2016

If you are among the 13,000 people who travel from Denver to Belize’s largest city last year, here’s some good news for you.

Denver International Airport said Thursday that Southwest Airlines next year will launch nonstop international flights between Denver and Belize City, the Central American nation's capital.

On the down side, the new service will only be one day a week, on Saturdays, and has a limited inaugural run: a total of seven flights between March 11 and April 22, 2017, according to DIA.

If the new flight proves successful, more service might be added, DIA spokesman Heath Montgomery said.

Belize City sits on the eastern coast of Central America and is known around the world for its reef scuba diving, fishing, beaches and eco-tourism.

DIA said more than 13,000 passengers traveled between Denver and Belize City in the last year, and the numbers have grown by an estimated 50 percent since 2013.

The flight is scheduled to depart DIA at 10:30 a.m., arriving in Belize City at 2:50 p.m. local time. Southwest will operate the flight with a 737-700 that has 143 seats.

“With the addition of Belize City to our growing network of international destinations, Denver travelers will have an exciting new city to explore during next year’s spring break season, and passengers from across the United States will be able to conveniently connect through DIA to this new Central American destination,” airport CEO Kim Day said in a statement.

With the addition of Belize City, DIA now has service to 20 international destinations in eight countries.
