Virgin adds Montego Bay flights
May 23, 2012

Capacity to the Caribbean is being raised by Virgin Atlantic this winter.

Plans for an additional weekly flight from Gatwick to Montego Bay in Jamaica came just days after the carrier announced it would be withdrawing a Heathrow to Nairobi route from September.

A new Friday departure from November will bring frequency to the Caribbean resort destination up to three flights a week.

The airline currently operates on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Virgin Atlantic Caribbean regional manager Nick Parker said: “The flight will bring a welcome boost to tourist and visitor numbers to the UK and Jamaica with growing demand between the two locations.

“We have committed more than £50 million to completely refurbishing the aircraft used on this service including new wider seats in Economy and Premium Economy and a new touch screen in-flight entertainment system throughout. The new system by Panasonic offers 300 hours of content including the latest movies, TV shows and music for our passenger’s enjoyment.”

The first newly-kitted-out aircraft will fly on the Caribbean routes from this month with the remainder of the refits due to be completed in time for the start of the additional service in November.

Montego Bay Airports chief executive Eduardo Canjelas said: “The UK is the largest inbound market from Europe to Jamaica and Virgin Atlantic is key to this connection.

“They have been a strong partner with us since starting their operations to Montego Bay in 2006 and we look forward to their continued success.”
