Condor, Eurowings fill Düsseldorf gaps with new Caribbean flights
  • Condor and Eurowings are launching new flights from Düsseldorf to fill gaps left by Air Berlin’s cancellation of flights to the Caribbean.

The insolvent German airline has cancelled nearly all of its long-haul flights from Düsseldorf and Cologne operated by its fleet of 17 leased A330s from late September. Leasing firm Aer-Cap has demanded the return of 10 of these intercontinental planes.

In response, both Thomas Cook’s German airline and Lufthansa’s budget subsidiary are moving quickly to fill the gap left at Düsseldorf, in the heart of Germany’s largest catchment area of North Rhine-Westphalia.

From November 1, Condor will launch six weekly flights from Düsseldorf to the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana and La Romana), Mexico (Cancun), Jamaica and Barbados with an A330-200 that was formerly operated by Air Berlin. The airline said that along with its own customers, it will be “taking former Air Berlin customers on their holidays”.

"We are delighted to be able to offer the German tour operators and our passengers additional flights from Düsseldorf, thus securing holidays in the long-term for our package travelers," said CEO Ralf Teckentrup.

"We have made every effort to find a solution to maintain travel arrangements and spoke to many tour operators, tourist offices and the airports. We quickly came to the conclusion that this short-term measure is a necessary step to secure the Caribbean holidays of many travellers."

Similarly, Eurowings will fly from Düsseldorf to the Dominican Republic with four weekly services to Punta Cana from November 8. From mid-December the airline will add weekly flights to Puerto Plata, Cancun and Varadero.

Separately, Eurowings has unveiled its summer 2018 scheduled with 22 new destinations. These include long-haul flights from Munich, where three A330s will be stationed, to Bangkok, Las Vegas, Montego Bay, Mauritius, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Fort Myers, Varadero and Windhoek. Another new intercontinental route is Cologne – Fort Myers.
