Barbados has secured additional airlift out of Germany for the 2016/2017 winter season. Condor Airlines has agreed to operate a new service out of Munich, Germany, on Saturdays, beginning on November 12, which will bring the number of weekly services from Germany to the island to three. The airline, which is part of Thomas Cook Group Airlines, currently operates three flights a week out of Manchester in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The agreement was made ahead of the official start of the Berlin International Trade Fair held earlier this month, when a delegation of private and public sector representatives from Barbados, led by parliamentary secretary in the ministry of tourism and international transport, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, met with officials at Condor Airlines.

According to the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), the Munich airport is Germany’s second largest hub and is expected to guarantee better access for persons coming from “Germany’s wealthiest regions”, Austria, Northern Italy and Switzerland.

Chief executive officer of the BTMI, William Griffith, noted that the agreement was a positive one for Barbados. “Good airlift is the backbone of any tourism sector and we continue to have great relationships with our airline partners. Our primary goal going forward is to deepen those partnerships, just as we’ve demonstrated with Condor here in Berlin,” he said.

Head of network development long haul for Thomas Cook Group Airlines, Wilken Bellman, spoke highly of Barbados as a destination and was optimistic about the new service. “Barbados is a great holiday destination that sees increasing popularity from Germany and other countries in Central Europe. It is perceived as safe, good value for money and offers a wide variety of authentic activities and experiences. This new flight from Munich also complements our existing service out of Frankfurt, and we look forward to the additional mutual benefits in our partnership with Barbados,” Bellman stated.

Germany is the most important source market in Continental Europe for the island. In 2015, 12,406 Germans visited Barbados, which was 3.2 percent more than in 2014.
