Continental drops free snacks in economy class
By Gay Nagle Myers

Bye-bye free pretzels. Continental no longer is serving them in economy class.

The carrier ended its practice of free snacks in coach on its domestic flights and flights serving Hawaii, Latin America, the Caribbean, Mexico resort destinations and Canada, according to the carrier.

Business-class passengers will continue to receive free goodies on all flights.

Meal and snack options are available for purchase on most flights that are between two-and-a-half and six-and-a-half hours in length.

The carrier will continue to offer complimentary meals in economy class on its transatlantic, transpacific and South America flights.

The for-purchase selections range from a mini snack box for $4.50 (health bar, yogurt raisin package, crackers and cheese spread) to a grilled chicken spinach salad for $8.95 (chicken packaged separately for vegetarians).

The no-pretzel move aligns Continental with United, which bought Continental last year.

Free snacks still are handed out on AirTran, Alaska Airlines, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue and Southwest.
