Continental starts Turks and Caicos flights
Monday 28 February

This is going to render the Turks and Caicos more accessible to flocks of flyers: Continental just connected its Newark Liberty International Airport hub to Providenciales, prime landing spot for explorations of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Calling Continental’s Newark operation, “the main airline hub in the northeastern United States,” Turks and Caicos Islands Tourist Board Director Ralph Higgs says the move “is a step in the right direction for us.”

The idea, of course, is to flow more flyers south – not just from the New York metro area, but from anywhere connected to Newark Airport.

It will take a while to fly to these consummate Caribbean islands – about three-and-a-half hours from Newark. Initially, Continental will make the trip four times each week, on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Daily service clicks in Mar. 6.

Newark flights to Providenciales depart EWR at 9:35 a.m., and arrive at 1:10 p.m. Return Providenciales to Newark flights leave PLS at 2:05 p.m. and make it into Liberty International at 5:45 p.m. That positions passengers to make same-day connections to a significant slice of Continental’s domestic route network.

A couple of other carriers fly nonstop from the Big Apple, specifically from JFK. Discount airline JetBlue just began Turks and Caicos flights. American Airlines has been making the journey for a while now.

After probing the possibilities in Providenciales (called ‘Provo’ by locals) consider a short flight to the other islands. Each possesses its own character, moves at its own pace. Want to investigate the islands by boat? There’s regular ferry service to the North and Middle Caicos.
