Continental sets start date, prices for food charges

Continental Airlines passengers will soon be able to buy Asian noodle salad, cold sliders and parfaits during their flights.

Beginning Oct. 12, Continental will start charging for snacks and meals in economy class on most domestic and Canadian flights and to some Latin American destinations.

Food will still be free in first class, on other international flights and domestic flights longer than six and a half hours.

Continental will serve Angus cheeseburgers, Jimmy Dean sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches, cheese & fresh fruit plates and chocolate-covered Eli's Cheesecake on a stick, among other items.

Prices will range from $1.50 for Pringles Original Potato Crisps to $8.25 for the grilled chicken spinach salad.
"The new menu is a direct result of feedback from our customers, who told us they wanted more food choices on our flights," said Sandra Pineau-Boddison, Continental's vice president of food services. "With that in mind, Continental researched trends in the restaurant industry and tested and tasted a broad range of possible menu items in order to provide dining options that reflect today's customer preferences."

On Friday, the Houston carrier will merge with Chicago-based United Airlines, which also charges for food.
