BA to cancel 1% of flights during three-day strike

British Airways has been forced to merge some short-haul services from Heathrow over the three days of a threatened strike by cabin crew later this week.

The airline last night issued contingency plans for dealing with the latest walkout but Unite union members of the so-called mixed fleet, which will lead to minor cancellations.

The second strike this month will run for three days from Thursday in an ongoing row over pay.

BA pledged to run all long-haul services to and from Heathrow together with flights from Gatwick, London City airport and Stansted.

“We will merge a small number of our short-haul services at Heathrow, resulting in the cancellation of only one per cent of our total scheduled flights across the three days,” the airline said.

“Customers affected will be able to fly slightly earlier or slightly later.

“We have further strengthened our schedule for January 19-21, the days for which mixed fleet Unite has called strike action, and will fly all customers to their destinations.”

Unite claimed that “scores” of flights were cancelled in the first wave of industrial action over two days last week in a dispute over “poverty pay”.
