American Airlines Ditches Reduced Legroom Plan after Customer Backlash
June 28, 2017

CALIFORNIA

American Airlines has scrapped plans to reduce the legroom in their new Boeing 737 Max planes following a passenger backlash over the proposed changes.

Last month, the airline announced that it would be decreasing the pitch size (the space between seatbacks) from 30 inches to 29 inches in three rows of its new aircraft.

Older models of Boeing 737 planes had 160 seats, but the 737 Max was originally planning to squeeze 10 more seats into the same space by reducing the pitch and installing a smaller bathroom.

In a statement released last Tuesday, American Airlines said it had “received a lot of feedback from their customers and team members” regarding their plans to decrease the size of the pitch.

The LA Times reports that feedback from unhappy travellers and staff members was enough to change their original plans, because the airline decided to use alternative methods to increase their aircrafts’ seating capacity.

The US carrier now plans to remove one row of main cabin extra seats — which have a pitch ranging from 35–37 inches, according to SeatGuru — and replace them with standard coach seating, effectively giving them 172 seats, two more than the original plan would have yielded.

The LA Times quoted American Airlines President Robert Isom as saying: “This is the right call for our customers and the right call for our team members who take care of them.”

Plans to reduce legroom as part of a raft of cost-cutting measures have reportedly jeopardized the four-star status of the UK’s flagship carrier British Airways.
