AA's new Boeing 737s won't have seatback screens

American Airlines won't have seatback video screens on the 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft it has ordered, as it plans to phase out video screens on most of its new domestic aircraft, the company said in a letter to employees.

American plans to take delivery of its first four MAX planes this year and another 16 next year.

"More than 90% of our passengers already bring a device or screen with them when they fly," American told its employees. "Those phones and tablets are continually upgraded, they're easy to use, and most importantly they are the technology that our customers have chosen. So it makes sense for American to focus on giving customers the best entertainment and fast connection options rather than installing seatback monitors that will be obsolete within a few years."

American will continue to have video screens installed on new widebody aircraft, which are used primarily on international routes, as well as on its three-class Airbus A321s, which it uses on transcontinental routes.

Last August, American made inflight entertainment free for the majority of its domestic flights and on all domestic flights on which it has installed an internal streaming system. Passengers on those routes can choose among 165 movies, 300 television shows, 700 music albums and 20 games. The offerings are available via seatback screens or streaming on personal devices.

Strange... while most othert carriers are ADDING conveniences, AA is REMOVING them. Little wonder that they are losing market share to everyone else.
