Air Canada rouge, the Montreal-based carrier’s new low-cost international subsidiary airline, launched operations Monday with an Airbus A319 flight from Toronto to Kingston, Jamaica.
Rouge’s startup fleet is comprised of two A319s and two Boeing 767-300ERs sourced from Air Canada’s mainline fleet but reconfigured to carry up to 30% more passengers. Air Canada has said the rouge fleet could grow to 50 aircraft in four years.
President and CEO Calin Rovinescu has cited rouge as a key pillar of Air Canada’s strategy of building a robust international network—with Toronto Pearson Airport serving as a gateway hub—that he believes can help turn Air Canada’s financial position around.
Rouge will fly 28 flights in its first week of operation, Air Canada said.
