Airport Security Officers Happy With New Jobs
By Observer News - Friday, June 5th, 2009

The Antigua Trades & Labour Union (AT&LU) has reported that some of the former airport security officers who were upset over being placed on beach patrol duty are now happier after being assigned to what they consider to be better jobs.

But General Secretary Stafford Joseph has said there are concerns about some of the others who are still in limbo.

The AT&LU had agitated for the workers to be given more appropriate positions after the Antigua & Barbuda Airport Authority took over security operations at the VC Bird International Airport and they were not kept on to work there.

Joseph said he has been hearing about some positive developments recently.

“One of the former security workers is now doing clerical work and another has been sent to do teaching because of the qualifications they have,” he told The Daily OBSERVER.

“So I am getting some good reports that these workers have other skills that can be utilised within the system, as the union would have indicated … and can be employed in meaningful positions and give back to the country what the country gave to them in their training.”

However, Joseph said some other workers have not been as fortunate.

He said that there have been instances where workers have been recommended to other government agencies but have been turned away.

The AT&LU boss said he still wants to see those employees given positions that reflect the training and skills which they have.
