Barbuda Airways – cheap and reliable air link – soon to be a reality
June 12, 2015

The announcement by the government that it will set up an airline to provide cheap and reliable air links between Antigua and sister isle Barbuda will soon be a reality. That is because an agreement setting up the airline will be signed into force next Thursday between the Government and Caribbean Helicopters Ltd.

Speaking on the issue, Barbuda Representative, the Hon. Arthur Nibbs, said under the agreement, the Government will inject US$300,000.00 to acquire a 9-seater Islander aircraft. Caribbean Helicopters will itself acquire a second aircraft and operate the company. It is anticipated that as the service grows additional aircraft will be added to the fleet.

According to Minister Nibbs, Barbuda is being promoted as a five-star destination and one of the requirements is for a reliable airline service between the island and Antigua where there is an international airport. He said the airline will also make it possible for more and better communications between the two islands. He announced that tickets will cost US50.00 roundtrip as the fares are being kept low so that more people will want to travel between the islands.

Among the beneficiaries of this move, he noted will be such things as sports and culture. “It is now conceivable that sporting teams from the islands will want to play more games in either island as the cost of travel is being made affordable,” Nibbs told Caribbean Times. Meanwhile, Nibbs said the Cabinet has decided that Barbuda will be the country’s next port of entry. He said systems now need to be put in place to make this operational.
