[Antigua] Air Traffic Controllers in ‘Work to Rule’ mode
Thursday, August 11th, 2011.

St. John’s Antigua

Air traffic controllers are operating on “work to rule” as they continue to object to government’s failure to pay transitional allowance on time.

The action, which began Tuesday evening, continues to cause slight delays to some flights.

Government has reportedly paid the money that was outstanding from last month, but air traffic controllers are not expected to receive the funds until Monday, the earliest.

A source said Finance & Economy Minister Harold Lovell notified workers yesterday about the impending payment.

However, according to reports, the 52 employees are upset that the problem of late payment, which dates back six months, has still not been resolved.

They are reportedly accusing government of acting in bad faith and breach of contract by not paying in a timely manner.

“It has brought back a pre- 2007 and 2009 atmosphere,” the source told this newspaper.

During those periods, workers took industrial action over a number of issues, causing severe disruption to flights into and out of the V C Bird International Airport.

Continuous attempts to reach representatives of the Guild of Antigua & Barbuda Air Traffic Controllers (GABATCO) have not been successful.
