[Antigua] New LIALPA chairman
Friday, February 3rd, 2012.

St. John’s Antigua

Captain Arthur Senhouse was “overwhelmingly” elected the new chairman of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots’ Association (LIALPA). He resides in Antigua and has been employed by regional carrier LIAT for the past 24 years.

“He received seven-eighths of the ballots which was a very good response,” the organisation’s secretary, Captain Patterson Thompson, told The Daily OBSERVER. Senhouse was challenged for the position by former vice-president Captain Carl Burke.

The poll to fill the top LIALPA post left vacant by the resignation of Captain Michael Blackburn took place in Antigua & Barbuda as mandated by the association’s constitution. A meeting will be held shortly in Barbados to “keep members there apprised of what is going on.”

Captain Thompson said turnout for the vote was “very high,” with it being one of the “best in a long time.”

His former chairman, Blackburn, stepped aside in late December saying he did not want to compromise the organisation as he prepares for a legal battle with LIAT.

The trade unionist who has often publicly butted heads with the airline’s management is seeking redress for wrongful dismissal after being summarily fired.

Two other positions – council members – were also up for grabs during Wednesday’s “special election”.

Eric Ward has filled one of the three Barbados spots left vacant by Captain Blackburn. Chetwyn Clarke replaces Senhouse as a council member for Antigua & Barbuda and the position now held by Neil Cave was left vacant by a resignation.
